 Emir Kusturica’s “Promise Me This” had its premiere on the Festival in Cannes last year. Starring in the film are young actors Marija Petronijevic, playing the character of Jasna, and Uros Milovanovic, who plays Cane. They have been assigned these roles on a casting involving almost 4000 people from Serbia and Bosnia. Marija and Uros say that the shooting was hard, for it lasted for almost 7 months, but that they enjoyed working with Emir Kusturica, who they praise very much.When speaking about her character, Marija says it is a young and completely ordinary girl, who goes to school and leads an ordinary life. She is not aware of the other “job” of her mother, who at night is a prostitute in the brothel. She is only aware of her daily job in the kindergarten.
Jasna is a good and naïve person. The plot begins with the appearance in her life of Cane, who first wants to propose her and then follows her, not letting her out of his sight. Their first encounter takes place on a bridge and as of then, Cane starts courting Jasna. He is the one to reveal to Jasna her mother’s double life and about how her mother is under the influence of the macro and intends on convincing Jasna to join her. Jasna refuses to believe Cane. Later she is kidnapped and taken to the brothel and Cane is determined to save her. He manages to do so and takes Jasna to the village. They end up marrying each other and thereby Cane fulfils his vow completely.
Marija says: “I think that Cane was attracted by Jasna’s beauty. Although in the scene when they first meet, we can see some girls that are more attractive, Cane has its eyes set on her. He just got out of his village and never had the opportunity previously to be in the company of a girl like that. It was love at first sight for her and Jasna wasn’t indifferent either. Ultimately, they end up in love and we have a happy ending.
